How to Enable the Two-Factor Authentication in Instagram

Two-factor authentication (2FA), often referred to as two-step verification, is a security process wherein the user provides two authentication factors to verify their identification. Recently, Instagram is one of those apps who now integrates the two-factor authentication. The two-factor authentication on Instagram works with your mobile phone number. Whenever you sign in to the app with your Instagram account, you will have to enter an eight-digit code to verify your identity. This code is then sent to the phone number Instagram has on record for your account.

If you want to turn on the two-factor authentication on your Instagram account, follow these steps:

STEP 1: Launch the Instagram app from your mobile device.

STEP 2: Tap your profile tab, and then tap the cog wheel button at the top to go to your account settings.

STEP 3: Under the Account section, tap on Two-Factor Authentication.

STEP 4: Tap on the switch next to Require Security Code to turn it on and you will be directed to the Confirmation screen.

STEP 5: On the Confirmation screen, check if your phone number is correct. Otherwise, tap Change it and make the necessary changes.

STEP 6: Wait for the security code to be sent to your mobile device, then proceed to enter the code in the field provided, then tap Done.

NOTE: Once you’ve turned on two-factor authentication, you will be presented with a list containing five backup codes. These codes can be used to authenticate your identity if you’re unable to receive a text message. Think of a similar situation where you have Wi-Fi but no cellphone coverage. You can use one of these codes in place of the verification code.

STEP 7: Either tap Copy Codes or Take Screenshot so that you’ll have a quick reference of these codes.

NOTE: Instagram suggests for you to copy the codes instead of taking a screenshot. If you have an app like Dropbox installed, there’s a chance you might accidentally upload the screenshot to your account.

To get a new list of codes, tap on Get New Codes.

STEP 8: If you want to turn off two-factor authentication, simply go to your account settings and tap on Two-Factor Authentication.

STEP 9: Tap the switch next to Require Security Code to turn it off.

NOTE: You don’t need to verify your identity in order to turn off two-factor authentication.
