How to Properly Transfer Data From Your Old Nintendo Switch to a New One

Nintendo Switch enables you to transfer your existing user and save data in case you’ll be getting a new one. This is great because all your hours of gameplay and achievements will not go to waste. If you’re going to hand over your old Nintendo Switch to your friend or another member of the family, this is one important thing that you need to do.

Firstly, here are some important things you need to take note of before performing the transfer process:

  • You will need to have both the old and new Nintendo Switch consoles for the transfer process.
  • Both consoles (old and new) will have to be connected wirelessly on the same network.
  • See to it that both consoles (old and new) must have a firmware version of 4.0 or higher (don’t do this if the console is still running version 3.0 and you’re planning to jailbreak it).
  • The old Nintendo Switch must have a Nintendo account associated with it.
  • The new Switch can’t already be linked to the same Nintendo Account that you want to transfer data from since you’ll connect to the new Switch during the transfer process.
  • The new console’s maximum user limit is seven (the Switch’s user limit is eight).
  • Make sure the new Switch has sufficient internal storage space in order to accommodate the data transfer.
  • Once the transfer is complete, you’ll no longer find the data in the old Switch anymore (you can’t have the data on both consoles).
  • You cannot transfer screenshots and video captures to the new Switch (they will stay in the old Switch).
