How to Set Up New Joy-Con Controllers With the Nintendo Switch

It’s a very easy process setting up your Nintendo Switch for the first time, including the Joy-Con Controllers that come with your console. If you’d like to pair more than one set of Joy-Cons to your Switch so that you can play match-up game with your friends, the pairing process is also a no-brainer.

There are two methods you can perform in order to pair a new Joy-Con Controller with your Nintendo Switch console. Follow the procedure which is more convenient to you.

METHOD #1

This is the simplest way to pair a new set of Joy-Cons to your Nintendo Switch; however, if you’re planning to pair more than one Joy-Con, this process can be a little tedious.

STEP 1: From the Switch’s Home screen, select Controllers.

STEP 2: Select Pair New Controllers.

STEP 3: Slide the Right Joy-Con into the console (like you’re playing in tablet mode).

STEP 4: Slide the Left Joy-Con into the console (like you’re playing in tablet mode).

STEP 5: Select Done.

METHOD #2

This method is recommended if you’re planning to pair multiple sets of Joy-Cons at once.

STEP 1: From the Switch’s Home screen, select Controllers.

STEP 2: Select Change Grip/Order.

STEP 3: Press the Sync button on each Joy-Con controller you wish to pair.

NOTE: The Sync button is the small black button in between the SL and SR buttons as shown in the picture below.

STEP 4: Once the Joy-Con has paired, wait for a solid green light to appear next to the sync button; from here you can change the grip/order of the controllers as normal.
