How to Update the Firmware of Your Xbox One Wireless Controller

One of the benefits of having the latest firmware loaded on your Xbox One Wireless Controller is that you can make the full use of your Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter capabilities. Along with this is that the latest firmware also includes important controller enhancements. There are two ways on how you can update its firmware — via wireless or USB connection.

Choose the method of loading the latest firmware on your Xbox One Wireless Controller whichever is convenient to you:

Update via Wireless Connection

NOTE: If you have purchased your Xbox One Wireless Controller in or after June 2015, you can update its firmware wirelessly without the need to connect it via USB cable. This controller has a small and circular 3.5 mm port located at the bottom. This means if your controller doesn’t have this port, you need to do the update via USB connection.

Below are the steps you need to follow in order to update the firmware of your Xbox One Wireless Controller:

STEP 1: On your Xbox One console, sign in to Xbox Live, and then install the latest system update when prompted to do so.

STEP 2: If you have a stereo headset adapter, connect it to the bottom of your controller in order for it to get updates as well.

STEP 3: If you’re using a stereo headset adapter, connect a headset in order for your adapter to turn on.

STEP 4: Next, press the Xbox button.

STEP 5: Go to System, then choose Kinect & devices, and then go to Devices & accessories.

STEP 6: Select the controller you would like to update.

STEP 7: Select Device info, then select the Firmware version box, and then hit Continue.

NOTE: Once you have successfully loaded the update, you can also do the same thing on your additional controllers by selecting the Update another button, and then repeating the same procedure.

STEP 8: Once you have completed updating all your controllers, choose the Exit button.

STEP 9: Turn on your wireless controller by pressing the Xbox button.

Your controller now has the latest update installed and you may now start using your Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter.

Below are some important reminders you need to take note of when performing this update method:

To fix this, go to the Home screen and unplug the adapter. Then, re-plug the adapter into the controller.
  • You only need to update your controller one time to use the stereo headset adapter. However, if you plan to use the stereo headset adapter with other Xbox One controllers, you’ll need to follow this process for each controller. Additionally, check for new updates periodically as Xbox frequently ships new controller features and improvements.
  • If you try to update a controller that was already updated, the system will check the controller and proceed to the success screen within a few seconds to indicate that it’s already updated.
  • If you have more than one controller connected via USB cable, the update will tell you to disconnect the other controller and update just one controller at a time.
