What to Do If Getting “The Update is Not Applicable to Your Computer” Error Message When Installing Windows 8.1 Preview from the Windows Store

Windows 8.1 Preview can be downloaded either by direct update from the Windows Store or by clean installation using the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO file. Installing Windows 8.1 Preview from the Windows Store is quick and easy. You need to download first a small update so that your Windows 8 computer can prompt you about the availability of Windows 8.1 Preview. However, there are instances wherein some users encounter the following error message when trying to install the required update: “Windows Update Standalone Installer. The update is not applicable to your computer.” When this error message appears, the user will be unable to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Preview. This problem normally occurs if the computer is set to use a different locale and language.

The following is a list of locale or languages that are compatible with Windows 8.1 Preview:

  • Arabic
  • English (United States)
  • Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
  • French
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Swedish
  • Turkish

In order to install Windows 8.1 Preview, you should set your computer to use a supported locale or language. To do this, follow the instructions below:

Change Locale Settings

STEP 1: Go to Control Panel, then click the Region icon.

STEP 2: When the Region windows appears, click the drop-down menu under Format, then select any of the supported locale or languages.

NOTE: In this example, we selected English (United States).

STEP 4: Restart your computer, then try to install Windows 8.1 Preview update again.
