What to Do If the Contact Names on Your iPhone’s Messaging App is Not Showing

With too many things to do and remember, people are not used to remembering someone’s number. That’s also one of the main reason why there’s a Contact app on our mobile phones so that we don’t have to bother on remembering any contact number. There have been reports that iPhone users, running on iOS 5 and up, have experienced a problem wherein their messaging app seem to have lost communication with the Contacts app. Contacts who have sent messages only show their phone numbers, and not the names that were registered in Contacts.

Below are some troubleshooting methods that you can try if your iPhone’s messaging app is not showing the names of people who message you. Perform the options in the same order, with the last option serving as your last resort.

OPTION 1: Hard Reset the iPhone

STEP 1: Press and hold the power button until your iPhone powers down.

STEP 2: Repeat Step 1 until it powers back up.

STEP 3: Check your messages and see if the contact names have appeared.

If this did not resolve your problem, proceed to the next troubleshooting method.

OPTION 2: Switch Off Dial Assist

The Dial Assist option helps in making sure that you are using the correct dialing prefix when calling to and from other countries. So if you’re traveling abroad, it is recommended to re-enable this option on your iPhone.

STEP 1: From your iPhone Home screen, tap on Settings.

STEP 2: Scroll down, then tap the Dial Assist slider to turn it off.

OPTION 4: Restore From Backup

This would be the last thing that you can try wherein you’re going to restore your iPhone from a point where your messaging app is working fine. This is a good last resort if you regularly back up your iPhone. Now, iCloud backup provides an easy and reliable backup solution for people who prefer to back up their iOS device wirelessly and automatically. If you have been using iCloud, you can automatically back up your device’s data once you’ve chosen this option. Another way to back up your iOS device is when you sync it via iTunes.

To restore a backup, follow these steps:

STEP 1: Connect your iPhone to a computer that has your backup data.

NOTE: Make sure the computer has the latest version of iTunes.

STEP 2: Go to File, then select Devices, and then select Restore from Backup.

NOTE: If you’re using iTunes version 10.7 or earlier, right-click on your device, then select Restore from Backup.

STEP 3: Check your messages again and see if the contact names are now showing.
